Voice chat and Bluetooth headphones

Game Settings › Input shows which microphone a game records from, and can keep Bluetooth headphones in their usual sound.

What it does

When a game uses the microphone of Bluetooth headphones such as AirPods, macOS switches the headphones to a headset mode with lower sound quality for as long as the microphone is in use. With Use the Mac’s microphone on, the game records from your Mac’s own microphone instead, so the headphones keep their usual sound. That works when the headphones are the Mac’s microphone, the Mac has a microphone of its own and, on a laptop, the lid is open. It changes only what Windows games in Malbec use; your Mac’s sound settings stay as they are. A store whose games have never used a microphone learns your Mac’s microphones the first time one does, so there the setting starts working from the next session.

How to use it

Open the game’s Game Settings › Input, check which microphone it shows under Controllers and headsets, and turn on Use the Mac’s microphone. It takes effect the next time you press Play. If teammates can’t hear you at all, check that the game may use the microphone in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone.
