Engine source
Malbec’s engine is Wine and DXMT with Recall’s changes and ours, under the GNU Lesser General Public License, version 2.1 or later. Here is the complete source for every engine we ship, from the same server as the app.
Source archives
| Engine | First shipped | Source | SHA-256 | Malbec versions |

What’s inside
| Part | What it does | License |
|---|---|---|
| Wine, from CodeWeavers’ published CrossOver 26.3 sources | Runs Windows programs on macOS | GNU LGPL 2.1 or later |
| DXMT by Feifan He | Turns DirectX 10 and 11 into Metal | GNU LGPL 2.1 or later |
| Recall’s build scripts and performance patches, by Joshua Asher Nelson | How the engine is patched and assembled; Overwatch’s tuning. Our changes to them are marked. | MIT through 1.0, Apache 2.0 from 1.1 |
| Our patches to Wine and DXMT | Each with a note saying what it changes and why. One fixes trackpad and raw-mouse input timing in the Mac driver. | GNU LGPL 2.1 or later |
| The helper programs | Small programs that come with the engine, in the archive’s helpers folder | Source included |
| Bundled libraries | FreeType, Wine Mono, MoltenVK, SDL2, GnuTLS, Nettle, GMP and libinotify-kqueue | Each under its own license |
The Malbec app itself is separate and closed source. It starts the engine as its own program and doesn’t link to it. Malbec never ships Apple’s D3DMetal.
Build it
Each archive has the build scripts we use. On a Mac with Apple silicon and Apple’s Command Line Tools, run engine/build-engine.sh followed by the engine version, for example engine/build-engine.sh malbec-20261007.4. The script fetches pinned, hash-checked sources and tools, applies the patches, builds Wine and DXMT, and tests the result.
Licenses and questions
The full license texts and every third-party notice are on the licenses page. If a source archive is missing or doesn’t build, write to support@malbec.app and we’ll fix it.
